GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Senior Bailey Hunter reached a career milestone as the Georgia Tech volleyball team swept Jacksonville, 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-16), on Saturday morning in the Yellow Jackets second match of the Florida Active Ankle Challenge. Tech (7-1) will play host No. 15 Florida later tonight at 7 p.m.
Hunter needed just two more kills heading into the match to eclipse the 1,000 career kills mark. She tallied a team-high 11 in the match and now has 1,009 kills in her career.
Junior Quinn Evans added eight kills on 10 attacks with no errors (.800) and contributed two blocks, to help lead the Yellow Jackets past Jacksonville (0-8).
Jacksonville had a balanced attack as three players recorded six kills led by Alison Loeppky who was six for nine with one error for a team-high .556 hitting percentage.
Tech led the Dolphins throughout the first half of game one until Jacksonville went on a five-point run behind the serve of Loeppky to take a 11-8 lead.
The Jackets tied it at 11 thanks to a kill by Hunter and two errors by Jacksonville. A ball handling error by Dolphins’ setter Courtney Kendall gave Tech the lead and the Yellow Jackets ended the opening stanza on five consecutive points.
Georgia Tech used that momentum to win the second set, taking an early 3-0 lead and never losing it. Evans (4-for-4) and Mead (3-for-3) hit for a perfect 1.000 in the game.
The Dolphins hit for just .059 in what turned out to be the last set of the match. The score was tied 4-4, but three Dolphin attacking errors gave Tech a three-point cushion and they eventually pulled away to take a commanding, 18-9, lead.
A kill by Annie Czarnecki poised Tech at match-point and a Jacksonville attacking error gave Tech the win.
