ARLINGTON, Texas (Sept. 4) — Sophomore Kyleen Bell (Rocklin, Calif.) captured MVP honors in the UTA/Jason’s Deli Tournament as the Georgia Tech volleyball team improved its record to 3-0 by defeating host Texas-Arlington (1-3) in the finals of the tournament by scores of 15-7, 15-8, 15-7. Sophomore Maja Pachale (Schwerin, Germany) also earned all-tournament honors as she collected 19 kills on the evening and nine digs. For the tournament, Pachale recorded 47 in nine games for the Jackets, while Bell tabbed 35 kills.
“I was really happy to win a tournament championship on the home floor of a very good team,” said Collier. “For us to be successful this year, we are going to have to win on the courts of other good teams, and our team adjusted well to playing in a championship match on a vistors court.”
“We had some players really play at a high level this tournament,” continued Collier. “The key to our season this year is playing well on the road. Everyone of our hitters stepped up and had a great match during the tournament, which was great to see.”
“And, I was very impressed with our defense. We have worked all pre-season on a defense and we are beginning to show remarkable signs of improvement. We are already a strong offensive team and to add defensive will make us even better.”
The Yellow Jackets will face the University of South Carolina on Friday at 2 p.m. in their season home opener in the Georgia Tech/Courtyard by Marriott Classic in O’Keefe Gym. Tickets may be obtained by calling 404-894-5447.
