ATHENS, Ga. – Junior Miguel Muguruza picked up his eighth win of the season as four Yellow Jackets moved out of the qualifying round at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Tennis Championships Thursday evening in Athens, Ga.
Muguruza moves onto Friday’s main draw after defeating Florida State’s Owen Long in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The Wesley Chapel, Fla. native picked up a team-leading eighth win on the day.
Also moving on through the qualifier was senior Austin Roebuck, junior Ryan Smith and freshman Magin Ortiga.
Smith’s victory came as a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Florida Atlantic’s Georg Matschke, Ortiga’s a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Mercer’s David Barton, and Roebuck’s a 6-3, 6-2 win over Christopher Swanteson of Stetson.
All four Tech netters will play at 9:30 a.m. Friday, joining teammates Dean O’Brien, Guillermo Gomez, Eliot Potvin and Juan Spir.
Junior Doug Kenny was unable to move on through the round, after dropping a tough 4-6, 4-6 match to Georgia State’s Matthijs Verdam.
Doubles play begins at 8 a.m. Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Kenny teams up with Roebuck to take on Johnny Hamui and Dan Cash of Florida, O’Brien is pitted with Potvin to face Stetson’s Swanteson and Njal Stene, Smith and Spir play against Miami’s Carl Sundberg and Hector Nieto, and the duo of Miljevic and Muguruza will face Christian Vitulli and Borja Malo of Georgia.
