THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball head coach Nell Fortner is one of 15 candidates on the late season watch list for the 2022 Werner Ladder Naismith Women’s Coach of the Year Award.
Fortner, who was a semifinalist for the award in 2020, has guided Georgia Tech to tremendous success in just three years on The Flats. This season, Fortner has led the Yellow Jackets to a 19-6 overall record thus far and 10-4 Atlantic Coast Conference ledger. Under Fortner’s direction, Tech has produced three consecutive seasons with at least 10 ACC wins.
This season, the Yellow Jackets returned to the national spotlight, ranking as high as No. 11 in the Associated Press national poll, setting a program record for highest-ever ranking in AP poll history. Currently ranked No. 16, Tech has spent the last 10 consecutive weeks ranked in the nation’s top 25 and 12 weeks overall this season.
One of the strongest defensive teams in the country, Georgia Tech is currently ranked No. 3 in the country in scoring defense. The Jackets also lead the ACC in rebounding defense, while ranking second in field goal percentage defense and third in three-point field goal percentage defense.
The Jackets have collected three wins over top 25 programs this season – downing then-No. 20 Georgia, No. 3 UConn and No. 20 North Carolina. Tech’s win over UConn snapped the Huskies’ 240-game winning streak against unranked opponents.
The watch list of 15 candidates will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists on March 10 and four finalists on March 24. The winner will be announced on April 2. To view the complete late season watch list, please click here.
Georgia Tech returns to action on Thursday, welcoming No. 19 Notre Dame to McCamish Pavilion. The game will serve as Tech’s annual Play4Kay Pink Game. Tip is slated for 8 p.m. on ACC Network.
