Former @GTSwimDive Punch Tickets to Rio

July 13, 2016

THE FLATS — Two former Georgia Tech swimmers, Gal Nevo `10 and Andrew Chetcuti `16, have qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in August. Nevo will represent Israel and Chetcuti will represent Malta at the Games.

“I am extremely proud of Gal and Andrew,” said head swimming and diving coach Courtney Hart. “Representing your country in the Olympics is the ultimate dream for any athlete. They are fantastic representatives of Georgia Tech.”

Nevo will compete in his third Olympic Games representing his native country, Israel. He also competed in 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London. In Beijing, Nevo swam in the 200m IM and 400m IM. Despite setting a personal-best time in the 400m IM, he did not advance to the finals in either event. He competed in the 200m butterfly as well as the 200m and 400m IM at the London games.

Chetcuti heads to his second Olympic Games. He competed for Malta in London in 2012 following his impressive freshman campaign at Georgia Tech. Chetcuti swam the 100m free in his Olympics debut and put down a time of 51.67, which was third-fastest in his heat, but did not advance from the preliminaries.

Nevo and Chetcuti raise the total number of Jackets competing in Rio to four. They will join former track and field athlete Chanute (Howard) Lowe ’05 and golfer Matt Kuchar ’00, who are both representing the United States in the 2016 Games.
