ATLANTA–Georgia Tech football standouts Travis Bell, James Butler, Nate Curry, P.J. Daniels and Chris Reis were named to the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic football team, announced Tuesday by ACC Commissioner John Swofford.
Butler, Curry, Daniels and Reis all made the team for the second straight year, while Bell is a first-time honoree. Butler, Daniels, Reis and Bell have also earned all-ACC honors on the field.
To be eligible, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the fall semester or have maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
Butler, a senior from Climax, Ga., and a Building Construction major, is also a two-time, first-team all-ACC honoree at free safety and a two-time semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back.
Another Building Construction major is Curry, a Miami, Fla., native and Tech’s second-leading receiver last fall who actually graduated last spring and played his final season while beginning work toward a second degree.
Reis, a junior Management major from Roswell, Ga., earned honorable mention all-ACC recognition at linebacker last fall after leading Tech with eight sacks.
Daniels, a junior from Houston, Texas, majoring in Management, led the Jackets with 714 yards rushing and eight touchdowns despite missing four games due to injury. He was the ACC’s leading rusher and a first-team all-conference selection in 2003.
Bell, a redshirt freshman from Roswell, Ga., and a Management major, turned in an outstanding season in his first year as Tech’s placekicker, earning second-team all-ACC and first-team freshman all-America honors.
