Top Storylines
• Coming off a thrilling 28-27 come-from-behind win at Virginia Tech and looking to move to .500 on the season, Georgia Tech hosts Miami (Fla.) in an ACC Coastal Division battle on Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
• Tech rides a wave of momentum into Saturday’s home finale, having come back from an 11-point deficit in the final 10 minutes of last Saturday’s victory at Virginia Tech. It was the largest fourth-quarter deficit that the Yellow Jackets have overcome in a win since it rallied from a 27-14 hole to defeat Georgia, 28-27, in 2016.
• Georgia Tech (4-5, 3-3 ACC), which has already secured its most wins in a season since 2018, is not only looking to even its overall record at 5-5, but can also clinch no worse than a .500 record in ACC play with a win over Miami (4-5, 2-3 ACC).
• Three Yellow Jackets — Sr. LB Charlie Thomas, Fr. DB Clayton Powell-Lee and QB Zach Pyron — were named ACC Players of the Week for their performances in last Saturday’s win at VT (Thomas – co-Linebacker of the Week, Powell-Lee – Defensive Back of the Week and Pyron – co-Rookie of the Week).
• Highlighted by forcing three crucial turnovers in the fourth quarter, Georgia Tech had a plus-three turnover margin in last Saturday’s win at VT (4-1) and is now plus- 15 on the season (22-7), which ranks No. 2 nationally (plus-1.67/gm). The Yellow Jackets also rank third nationally in turnovers gaines (22) and seventh in fewest turnovers lost (7).
• After leading the Jackets defensively last Saturday with 16 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble, Thomas is the first NCAA Division I player since TCU’s Paul Dawson in 2014 to record at least 86 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles in his team’s first nine games of the season.
Competitive Drive Initiative
In a unified endeavor, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation, Georgia Tech athletics and the Alexander-Tharpe Fund have come together to accelerate funding for student-athlete scholarships with the launch of the Competitive Drive Initiative. The initiative kicks off with the Accelerate GT Match Program, where any new gift to the A-T Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund made through Dec. 31 will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Georgia Tech Foundation, up to $2.5 million. Should Accelerate GT reach its $2.5 million fundraising goal, the matching gift would result in a $5 million impact for Georgia Tech athletics.
