THE FLATS – Legendary Georgia Tech football head coach Bobby Dodd is among seven members of the fourth-annual class of the Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced on Monday. Dodd will be inducted in conjunction with the 2022 Allstate Sugar Bowl, which will be played on Jan. 1 in New Orleans.
Dodd led Georgia Tech to three Sugar Bowl victories in a four-year span from 1953-56. Most notably, Dodd’s Yellow Jackets beat Ole Miss, 24-7, in the 1953 Sugar Bowl to cap a 12-0 season and seal the 1952 national championship for Tech.
Dodd and the Jackets would return to the Sugar Bowl in 1954 and 1956 and claim a 42-19 win over West Virginia and a 7-0 victory over Pitt, respectively. Under Dodd’s leadership, Tech became the first school to win three Sugar Bowls in a four-year span and remains one of only three programs to accomplish the feat, joining Ole Miss (1958, 1960-61) and Alabama (1975, 1978-79 and 1978-80).
In 22 seasons at Georgia Tech, Dodd led the Yellow Jackets to a 165-64-8 record. His 165 wins remain the most in Tech history, while his .713 winning percentage ranks second in school history behind only John Heisman, who won 76.4% of his games (102-29-7) as Tech’s head coach from 1904-19.
Dodd will become Georgia Tech’s second member of the Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame, joining Pepper Rodgers, who quarterbacked the Yellow Jackets to their wins in the 1953 and ’54 Sugar Bowls and was a member of the bowl’s inaugural hall-of-fame class in 2017.
