Cubaj Defensive Player of the Year Semifinalist

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball forward Lorela Cubaj was named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2022 Naismith Women’s Defensive Player of the Year Award, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Monday.

Cubaj is one of only two players from the Atlantic Coast Conference that made the semifinalist list, joining Louisville’s Emily Engstler.

Cubaj leads the ACC in rebounding, and ranks 11th in the nation, averaging 11.5 rebounds per game. She has led the Jackets in rebounding in 23 games and has recorded 20 games with double-figure rebounding totals.

Averaging 4.4 assists per game, Cubaj ranks second in the ACC and is the only post player in the league to lead their team in assists. She is also one of only five posts players to rank in the top 100 nationally in assists per game.

Cubaj has recorded 12 double-doubles on the season, which ties for second in the conference, and owns 18 games scoring in double-figures.

Georgia Tech returns to the hardwood on Thursday night in the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. The Yellow Jackets will face either Wake Forest or Virginia in second round action at 8 p.m. on RSN.
