Bergmann Lands ACC’s First Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann has been named ACC Player of the Week after leading No. 5 Georgia Tech volleyball to a 2-0 start to open the season at the Ole Miss Invitational, the league office announced on Monday.

Bergmann earns the ACC’s first recognition of the year after gathering four such honors a season ago, becoming the first student-athlete in the conference to receive ACC Player of the Week four times in a season since 2015. Compiling her accolades, Bergmann is up to six career ACC Player of the Week honors and eight total Atlantic Coast Conference weekly awards after earning ACC Freshman of the Week twice in her first season on The Flats.

The decorated Jacket led the way for Georgia Tech throughout the Ole Miss Invitational, garnering tournament MVP honors after piling up 45 kills at a .389 clip with 19 digs, three aces and four total blocks. With those numbers, she currently leads the nation in kills per set (6.43) and points per set (7.21).

The vaunted outside hitter took the season by storm, racking up a career-high 33 kills while hitting .459 and pitching in defensively with eight digs and a pair of blocks to propel the Jackets over Ole Miss. The 33 kills tied for the fifth most in a single match in program history as only four former Yellow Jackets on seven separate occasions had previously achieved the feat.

Bergmann followed up by leading Tech’s attack once more against No. 19 Illinois, notching her first double double of the season behind team highs of 12 kills and 11 digs along with a pair of blocks.

On the weekend, the Brazilian bomber also surpassed 1,200 career kills. The decorated Yellow Jacket continues to rewrite Tech’s record books as she moved up to seventh in program history in career aces with 133 to date.

The Jackets receive one of the first weekly ACC honors of the year after racking up 12 total a season ago, leading the league for the most in program history on record. Georgia Tech had at least one recipient of an ACC weekly award in eight of the 14 weeks the conference recognized winners last season.
