Cole Fiegel tallied two wins for the Jackets with a 6-4, 6-4 outing over Georgia Southern’s Casablancas and a 6-1, 6-3 rout of Stetson’s Ball. Elijah Melendez topped Georgia State’s Acuna, 6-7, 6-1(6) before dropping his next match to South Florida’s Sasha Gozun, 6-2, 7-6(5). Michael Kay fell to Florida’s Johannes Ingildsen, 6-3, 7-5.
Doubles Update: Andrew Li and Michael Kay advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw with a narrow 8-6 defeat of South Florida’s No. 12-ranked doubles pairing Gozun and Kalyuzhnyy. Melendez and Benito fell to Florida’s Perez-Blanco and Lipman in a close match, 8-7(5). The Yun brothers were topped another Florida pairing of Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen, 8-4.
Head coach Kenny Thorne says: “We did a better job competing and executing in singles today. Carlos did a good job closing out a tough opponent in straight sets. He is getting stronger as the tournament progresses. Phillip had a great match mentally. He was able to handle some adversity and come from behind to win his match. Mike and Andrew stayed in control of their doubles match against a good team and got the win. We lost our other two doubles matches because of some correctable execution errors, but we were looking to play the right way.”
