Andres Martin Advances to Second Round of NCAA Singles Championships

ORLANDO, Fl. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis players Andres Martin and Marcus McDaniel both competed in the first round of play in the 2021 NCAA Singles Championship tournament at the USTA National Campus in Orlando on Sunday. Martin advanced to the second round following a victory over Alabama’s Edson Ortiz, while McDaniel fell to South Florida’s Jacob Wojcik.

Martin garnered a close 6-7 (2), 7-6 (6), 6-1 win, taking over in the third set after two straight tiebreaker sets. He saved three match points in the second set and had an amazing comeback to start off the tournament. Martin improves to an 18-8 overall singles record this season, having won seven out of his last 10 matches. He will face off against the winner of the matchup between Nathan Ponwith of Arizona St & Florida’s Sam Riffice tomorrow in the round of 32.

McDaniel dropped a 6-3, 6-2 contest to Wojcik, ending the year with a 17-8 overall singles record. McDaniel was 8-4 against ranked opponents this season, capturing wins over Wake Forest’s No. 8-ranked Henri Squire, 7-6 (8), 3-6, 6-2, and NC State’s No. 13-ranked Alexis Galarneau, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

The pair will join forces tomorrow in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Men’s Doubles Championship tournament, taking on UCF’s Trey Hilderbrand/Bogdan Pavel. A complete bracket of the 2021 Doubles Championships can be found here. Martin is 17-5 overall in doubles play this year, sporting a 5-3 record when paired with McDaniel.
