Yellow Jackets Fall to Visiting Hokies, 6-1

March 22, 2008

Box Score

ATLANTA – Freshman Guillermo Gomez earned a win at No. 1 singles but the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (11-7, 1-4 ACC) fell, 6-1, to Virginia Tech (9-4, 2-2) Saturday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

“I have to be honest that was a lousy match for us,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “Coming off a match against Virginia, we did some good things in a situation where there was really no pressure. We went straight into a match with a team we were about evenly matched up with and played one of our worst matches of the season. That won’t be the case next week and our boys will be ready to play.”

Georgia Tech fought hard in the doubles matches but ultimately lost all three matches, two of which went to tie-breakers. The Hokies’ Pedro Graber and Nicolas Delgado won an 8-4 decision on court one over the Yellow Jackets’ duo of Scott Blackmon and Ryan Smith. In the no. 2 position, the Jackets’ pair of George Gvelesiani and Gomez fell in a tie-breaker [9-8 (7-5)] to Yoann Re and Sebastien Jacques of Virginia Tech.

Gomez quickly evened the score at 1-1 with a, 6-4, 6-1, win at No. 1 singles over the Hokies’ Albert Larregola. Virginia Tech regained the lead 2-1 with a, 6-1, 6-2, win from Nicolas Delgado over the Jackets’ Smith on court two. Brandon Corace made it 3-1 for the Hokies after defeating Tech’s Doug Kenny, 6-1, 7-5, in the sixth singles position. Jacques clinched the match for the Hokies with a, 6-4, 6-4, win over the Jackets’ Miguel Muguruza in the No. 4 spot. Virginia Tech won the final two matches in the No. 3 and 4 positions.

“Guillermo deserves some credit for the way he played,” Thorne said. “He came out and took care of business today.”

The Jackets will be back in action next Friday, March 28 as they travel to Raleigh for a 2:00 p.m. meeting with N.C. State (8-8, 1-2) at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
