March 17, 2002

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The 21st-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team was unable to pick up its second ACC win in as many days, dropping a 5-2 decision to fifth-ranked Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Yellow Jackets (11-4, 1-1 ACC) fell behind early in the match, dropping a pair of doubles matches to the Demon Deacons (14-1, 2-0 ACC) to open play on the day. Tech was able to claim on doubles victory, as the team of Jaime Wong and Laura Ozolins defeated Katie Martzoff and Danielle Schwartz in a tiebreaker, 9-8.

In singles competition, the Jackets were able to take a pair of matches from the Deacons, led by freshman Catherine Gunn, who won her second match in as many days with a hard-fought, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 win over Maren Haus at No. 3. The victory upped Gunns dual-match singles record on the year to an impressive 13-1.

Tech’s second singles win of the day came at the No. 6 spot, as senior Laura Ozolins downed Wake’s Aimee Smith in straight sets by a 6-2, 6-1 score.

The Yellow Jackets will make a return trip to North Carolina next weekend as they will face both Duke (March 23, 11 a.m.) and North Carolina (March 24, 1 p.m.) in a pair of ACC road matches.
