Women's Track & Field Signs Three in Early Signing Period

Nov. 23, 2004

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech women’s track and field head coach Alan Drosky announced the signing of Galina Becker, Jessi Cole and Katina Zuganelis during the early signing period, Nov. 10-17, on Tuesday morning. The current high school standouts will join the Tech squad for the 2005-06 season.

“We’re very pleased with the group of signees from the early signing period and feel that with these additions will strengthen some areas and fortify others,” said Drosky. “We’re always looking for outstanding young women, both academically and athletically, and believe strongly that these three ladies fit that bill perfectly. This is a great start for our recruiting year and we will continue working hard through the late signing period next April.”

Becker, a native of San Jose, Calif., is a senior at Mount Pleasant High School in San Jose. She tallied a fifth-place finish at the state championships in the long jump and a sixth-place finish in the triple jump as a junior. Becker set personal-record marks at the state meet in 2003 in the triple jump (40’5.75″), long jump (18’11.50″), 100-meter hurdles (14.42) and 100-meter dash (12.32).

Cole is a senior at Austin High School in Austin, Ind. The 6’3″ thrower has earned varsity letters in track and field, basketball, volleyball and softball. Cole has only been throwing for one full season and posted the 10th furthest throw in the nation for all high school females with a mark of 44’0″.

“Jessi is very talented and can even jump high enough to touch a basketball rim,” said throwing coach Allen Bradd. “She has a huge upside if she continues to work hard.”

A native of Acworth, Ga., Zuganelis is a senior at Kennesaw Mountain High School. She is a distance runner that finished second at the Georgia State Cross Country Championships with a time of 19:06. Zuganelis was an all-state selection this past season.
