Women’s Basketball Climbs to No. 15 in AP Poll

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball rose to No. 15 in the latest Associated Press women’s basketball poll released on Monday. The Yellow Jackets have been ranked in the top 25 five straight weeks.

Tech’s ranking of No. 15 matches its highest-ever ranking in the Associated Press poll. The Yellow Jackets finished the 2011-12 season ranked No. 10 in the USA Today/Coaches Poll.

Tech (11-3, 2-1 ACC) took the hardwood in one contest this week, coming away with a 67-31 triumph over Virginia. Playing with a short-handed lineup once again, the Jackets were led by Nerea Hermosa who finished with a career-high 20 points in the outing. Lorela Cubaj recorded her seventh double-double, and third straight, behind 17 points and 11 rebounds.

For the fifth week in a row, the ACC boasted six teams in the top 25: No. 3 Louisville, No. 4 NC State, No. 15 Georgia Tech, No. 16 Duke, No. 20 Notre Dame and No. 21 North Carolina.

Georgia Tech continues to boast the nation’s top defense, ranking first in the ACC and nation in scoring defense, while holding the top spot in the league in field goal percentage defense (second in the nation). Individually, Cubaj leads the ACC in rebounds per game, averaging 12.7, and is third in the nation.

Up next, Georgia Tech hits the road for a tilt at Pitt on Tuesday. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. in Petersen Events Center and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
