Williams, Marcelle Lead Tech at Orange & Purple Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. – Jacqua Williams won both the 100- and 200-meter dash to pace the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track & field teams at the Orange & Purple Classic Saturday on the Rock Norman Track.

Williams dominated the women’s 100m field with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 11.68. She also made her outdoor season debut in the 200m and earned the win with another NCAA Regional qualifying time of 23.58.

Freshman Jenae Anderson placed fifth in the 100m with a time of 11.97 and freshman Taylor Davidson finished seventh with a time of 12.03. In the 200m, sophomore Tiffany Grant crossed the line sixth with a time of 24.84. Freshman Kayla McKeirnan placed seventh with a time of 25.05.

On the men’s side, senior James Lemons II ran a team season-best time of 21.75 in the 200m for a ninth-place finish. Freshman Hunter Clasen placed seventh in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 48.28.

In the 800-meter run, freshman Amanda Montgomery placed third with a time of 2:16.96. Junior E.C. Gibbs placed third in the men’s 800m with a time of 1:53.40.

Senior Shantia Moss finished the 100-meter hurdles in first place with a new Rock Norman Track record and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.14. Senior Tenisha Griggs crossed the line fourth with a season-best time of 14.26. Sophomore Alphonso Jordan earned the win in the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.53.

Freshman Leslie Njoku crossed the line first in the 400-meter hurdles with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 59.48. In the men’s 400m hurdles, junior Mario Johnson placed second with a time of 53.36.

The women’s 4×400-meter relay team of McKeirnan, Montgomery, Grant and Njoku finished first with a time of 3:46.25. The men’s 4x400m relay team featuring Johnson, Derek Hoye, Matt DiDia and Clasen also earned the win with a time of 3:14.30.

Sophomore Tiffany Chavis placed third in the high jump with a personal-best mark of 5 feet, 5 inches. In the men’s triple jump, freshman Omar Morrison landed in fourth place with a personal-best mark of 49 feet, ¾ inch.

The Yellow Jacket men went one and two in the shot put as sophomore Steve Marcelle finished with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 56 feet, 9 ¼ inches and junior Andy Powlen had an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 56 feet, 6 ½ inches.

In the women’s hammer throw, junior Kimery Hern placed first with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 195 feet, 11 inches. Junior Alana Clooten finished second with an NCAA Regional mark of 180 feet, 2 inches.

Marcelle also earned an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the men’s discus with a mark of 174 feet, 1 inch to earn a first-place finish.

Tech returns home next weekend as it hosts the 2008 Georgia Tech Invitational Friday-Saturday, May 16-17 at the George C. Griffin track.
