Wilkinson Drafted by Giants

April 29, 2006

Former Georgia Tech all-conference linebacker Gerris Wilkinson was selected in the third round by the New York Giants on the first day of the National Football League.

Wilkinson, from Oakland, Calif., was the 96th overall selection in the 2006 draft. He is reunited with his former teammate James Butler, a safety who played his rookie season with the Giants in 2005.

A two-time all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, Wilkinson led the Jackets in tackles the last two seasons. As a senior he made 85 tackles with nine tackles for loss, four sacks, two interceptions and two pass breakups while leading a Tech defense that ranked in the top 25 nationally in virtually every category.

He ranks seventh in Tech history in career tackles for loss (3). His career totals also include 253 tackles, 12.5 sacks, three interceptions and six pass breakups.

Wilkinson earned his degree in Management in 2005.

The NFL Draft continues Sunday with rounds four through seven.
