Wicker Named @GTAthletics Senior Associate AD

June 8, 2015

THE FLATS — John David Wicker has been named Senior Associate Athletic Director for Operations at Georgia Tech, announced Monday by Athletic Director Mike Bobinski.

Wicker comes to Atlanta after spending the previous four years at San Diego State, first as Senior Associate AD / Chief Operating Officer for three years and then most recently as Deputy AD. In his role at SDSU, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Aztecs athletics department overseeing business operations; human resources; events and facilities; capital projects; strength and conditioning; academics; video; and sport oversight for football, rowing, and men’s and women’s basketball.

“I’m very pleased that John David is joining our senior leadership team,” Bobinski said. “He’s an accomplished professional who will bring extensive experience and new perspectives to our athletic program. I’m excited by the positive impact John David will have and welcome him and his family to Georgia Tech.”

Prior to his time at San Diego State, he was the Associate AD for Event and Facility Operations at Washington State from 2001-2011. While at Washington State, he was responsible for event planning and gameday responsibilities for all home athletic events, conference tournaments and NCAA championships, day-to-day oversight and operations of all athletic facilities, and the liaison for the athletic department on capital projects.

He served as Director of Event and Facility Operations at Southern Miss from 1999-2001. At USM, he oversaw all aspects of regular season and championship event operations, coordinated day-to-day maintenance of facilities, and acted as the liaison to the University on all capital projects. He also oversaw the design and initial construction of the $11 million Athletic Center, which houses administrative and coaching offices, football locker room, weight room, and training area.

Before joining the Southern Miss staff, Wicker spent three years at Georgia (1996-99). While in Athens, he also worked for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games in preparation for the 1996 Summer Olympics as the venue logistics manager for Sanford Stadium, home to the medal rounds for men’s and women’s soccer.

“I am very excited to be joining the Georgia Tech Athletic Association,” Wicker said. “I appreciate Mike Bobinski giving me the opportunity to come to Atlanta and be part of his leadership team. The Association has a rich history and has seen much success competitively as well as in the classroom. I look forward to working with the staff, coaches, and student-athletes to insure Georgia Tech remains competitive in all areas.”

Wicker graduated from Mississippi State in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in professional accountancy. He received his master’s degree in education with an emphasis in sports management from Georgia in 1997. He has completed the Sports Management Institute Executive Program (SMI) as well as the Division I-A Athletic Directors Institute.

Wicker and his wife, Rachel, have one child — a daughter named Scarlett Anne.
