Victoria Flores Tabbed ACC Freshman of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech women’s tennis freshman Victoria Flores was named the ACC Freshman of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Flores went 3-0 in a pair of wins for the Yellow Jackets over the weekend, including handing then-No. 3 Duke its first ACC loss of the season.

Flores collected both singles and doubles wins in Tech’s 4-2 triumph over Duke to open the weekend. The freshman partnered with fellow classmate Ida Jarlskog in doubles to hand Tech its first doubles win against the Blue Devils, defeating the fifth-ranked tandem in the country of Kelly Chen and Samantha Harris in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5). The Jackets would clinch a crucial doubles point to enter singles play leading the match. Flores then pocketed a straight-set singles win to put the Jackets in the lead, 2-1, uprooting Hannah Zhao, 6-3, 6-2. Tech’s win over Duke snapped a 10-match win streak by the Blue Devils and was just the second loss of the season for Duke.

In Sunday’s match against No. 27 Wake Forest, Flores picked up a singles win over Courtney Meredith at No. 6 to close out the match. Flores won a hard-fought three-set match, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3) to account for the final 6-1 score. In doubles, Flores and Jarlskog stood tied at 5-5 with Eliza Omirou/M.C. Meredith before the point was clinched and play was suspended.

UP NEXT: No. 2 Tech opens a three-match road swing at Pittsburgh on Friday, April 13. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
