Three Jackets Move On at Crimson Tide Fall Tournament

Oct. 26, 2007

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Three members of the Georgia Tech men’s team advanced in the singles draw on day one of the Crimson Tide Fall Tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Senior Scott Blackmon earned a straight-set victory over Alex Emery of UAB. Blackmon jumped out early and ran away with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Also picking up victories on the first day of competition were freshmen Eliot Potvin and Ryan Smith.

Potvin picked up a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over Max Genuini of Mississippi State. With the match tied at one set apiece, Potvin stepped up his game in the third to earn an easy win. Smith also needed three sets to earn his 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Alfredo Krywacz of UT Martin.

“Scott really played well today,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “He didn’t stay on the court any longer than he needed, which is something we like to see. The underclassman really showed me something today when they were able to fight back for their victories.”

In doubles play, the tandem of Blackmon and Smith fell behind in their first round match, 7-4, before storming back to earn a 9-7 win over Hans Spangeburg and Adrian Tollstem of UAB. The duo would again fall behind in their second round match but were unable to come from behind, losing 8-5 to Saketh Myneni and Trey Walston of Alabama.

“We are still trying to figure out which guys are going to gel together,” said Thorne of the Tech doubles teams. “I witnessed some good things between Scott and Ryan but we still have plenty to work on.”

The Crimson Tide Fall Tournament continues with singles play on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
