ATLANTA – Sophomore Steve Marcelle earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in the shot put to lead host Georgia Tech on the second day of the 2008 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the George C. Griffin Track on the Georgia Tech campus.
After day two, the Yellow Jackets are sitting in eighth place with 22 points on the men’s side and are in 10th place with 19 points on the women’s side.
Marcelle, a native of Green Bay, Wis., placed second in the men’s shot put with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 61 feet, 6 ¾ inches. He earns All-ACC honors for the second straight year in the outdoor shot put meet. Junior Andy Powlen finished in third place to earn his first career outdoor All-ACC honors with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 57 feet, 6 ¼ inches.
Also earning All-ACC honors was senior James Lemons II, who placed third in the men’s long jump with a personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 24 feet, 10 ½ inches. Sophomore Alphonso Jordan finished seventh in the long jump with a mark of 23 feet, 4 inches, earning two points for the Jackets.
Jordan also earned a qualifying time into Saturday’s final of the 110-meter hurdles when he crossed the line with a personal-best time of 14.26. The women’s team was led by Shantia Moss, who finished the 100-meter hurdles prelim with a season-best and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.10.
Junior E.C. Gibbs qualified for Saturday’s finals of the men’s 1500-meter run with a time of 3:50.35. Senior David Herren also earned a qualifying time after crossing the line with the ninth-best time of 3:50.01. Senior Jenny Sims qualified for the women’s 1500m final after running a time of 4:31.87 in the prelims.
In the men’s 800-meter run, sophomore Billy Mateker was the seventh athlete to qualify for Saturday’s final with a personal-best time of 1:51.83.
Freshman Leslie Njoku reached the finals of the of the women’s 400-meter hurdles after crossing the line with a time of 1:00.02 in the prelims. In the men’s 400-meter hurdles, junior Mario Johnson qualified for the finals with a time of 52.31.
Sophomore Tiffany Grant ran a personal-best time of 55.00 in the women’s 400-meter dash for a ninth-place finish in the prelims, just missing a bid into Saturday’s final.
In the final event of the day, senior Elena Linn placed eighth in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 10:53.22 to earn a point for the Jackets.
Saturday’s action gets underway at 10 a.m. with the men’s discus. Running events will begin with the men’s 4×100-meter relay at 1 p.m.
