The Jackets and the Lady Dogs Clash on the Court Sunday

Nov. 30, 2006

Atlanta – The Jackets(3-and-2) welcome in-state rival and the eighth-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs(6-and-0) to the Flats Sunday, Dec. 3 for a 2 p.m. match up in the Alexander Memorial Coliseum. This will be only the second time the teams have faced off in the Thrillerdome in over 15 years.

The last time Georgia visited The Flats was on Dec. 3, 2004 when they were ranked in the top ten as they are now. Tech triumphed that day with a 55-49 victory over their sixth-ranked rivals, earning just the second win over Georgia in the 32-year history of the rivalry. Tech’s first win over Georgia didn’t come until just two years earlier on Dec. 27, 2002, when the Jackets defeated the Lady Dogs 65-61 at Philips Arena in Atlanta.

There will be six Jackets on the court Sunday, led by top scorer Stephanie Higgs, who were part of the 2004 team that upset Georgia. Junior co-captain Janie Mitchell leads the Jackets in rebounding with 8.2 RPG and is second in scoring with 16.0 PPG behind Higgs’ 17.8 PPG. Fellow co-captain Chioma Nnamaka follows Mitchell with 4.8 RPG and 12.8 PPG.

Also part of that 2004 squad, junior point guard Jill Ingram will be a game-time decision for Coach MaChelle Joseph’s Jackets. Ingram, a five-foot-nine third-year starter, is nursing a stress fracture in her left foot and did not play in Tech’s last game. Ingram leads the team with 13 assists, despite sitting out of the Nov. 24 loss to San Diego.

After winning their first three games by an average of 35.7 points, the Jackets suffered road losses in their last two contests, falling 62-76 to the Temple Owls Nov. 20 and 59-62 to San Diego.

Georgia, ranked No. 8 by both USA Today and the Associated Press, is coming off their sixth win of the season, defeating Memphis 95-46 in Athens, Ga. Wednesday. Junior Tasha Humphrey saw her six-game suspension shortened by half a game Wednesday, when head coach Andy Landers put her in to play in the second half. Humphrey, who was suspended for underage possession of alcohol, will play in her first full game of the season Sunday vs. Georgia Tech.

Sunday’s game will feature activities for fans of all ages, with pre-game festivities at Jacket Jam kicking off at 12:30 p.m. The first 150 Georgia Tech students through the door will receive free pizza when they register to win a $300 gift card from Barnes & Noble. Georgia Tech faculty and staff can receive free admission to Sunday’s game by presenting their buzz card. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children and senior citizens and can be purchased at the door. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.
