Tech's Striplin Captures Singles Title at SDSU Fall Tennis Classic

SAN DIEGO –

Georgia Tech freshman Christy Striplin defeated San Diego’s Jenny Brown to capture the black draw singles title at the SDSU Fall Tennis Classic Sunday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State University.

Striplin dropped just six games in her three matches en route to the first draw title of her collegiate career, defeating Florida State’s Whitney Eber, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, New Mexico’s Jennifer Ryba, 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, and USD’s Brown, 6-1, 6-1 in the finals after advancing via walkover in the semis.

The rookie also teamed with senior Kacie Anson to defeat Rice’s Emily Braid and Amy Cao, 8-1, Sunday morning after defeating Long Beach State’s duo of Jessica Weeks and Krystina Katayama, 8-2, in late doubles action Saturday.

Anson advanced to Sunday’s gold draw final, but could not pull out a win against Rice’s Medeja Egic, who won 7-6 (6), 2-6, 10-6.

Also playing singles matches on the day for the Yellow Jackets were Kelly Anderson and Alison Silverio, who faced each other, and Whitney McCray, who faced a conference opponent from Florida State. Anderson, a senior, was a 6-4, 6-1 winner against the junior, Silverio, while McCray, sophomore at Georgia Tech, defeated Suzanna Mansour, 6-4, 6-2.

Rounding out Sunday’s doubles action for Georgia Tech were Anderson and McCray, who were 8-2 winners over Rice’s Kimberley Patenaude and Egic, while Lyndsay Shosho teamed with Silverio to down Blair DiSesa and Alanna Rodgers of Rice, 8-4.

The Yellow Jackets will conclude their fall campaign with a trip to the Florida State University Fall Invitational, which begins this coming weekend in Tallahassee, Fla.
