Oct. 7, 2003

Chattanooga, Tenn. – Georgia Tech senior men’s tennis standout Scott Schnugg turned in a solid opening day at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American qualifier by advancing to the second round in both singles and doubles on Tuesday in Chattanooga, Tenn. The event, which will culminate with the main draw of both singles and doubles this weekend, is being contested at the Champions Club.

Schnugg, who is seeded eighth in the qualifier, opened the day in singles competition against LSU’s Jason Hazley. Schnugg had little difficulty in the match, claiming a straight-set, 6-2, 6-1, victory. He will now face Felix Hardt of San Diego State in the second round on Wednesday.

In doubles play, Schnugg is paired with Yellow Jacket rookie Jose Luis Muguruza to form the tournament’s third-seeded team. The duo squared off with Alabama’s Chris Gostek and Stephen Mitchell and claimed a hard-fought 9-8 (5) victory in the first round and will face Miami’s Tim Krebs and Colin Purcell in the second round on Wednesday.
