May 11, 2002

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Georgia Tech sophomore Renee Metivier defeated her nearest competitor by nearly 32 seconds en route to a school record and NCAA provisional qualifying performance in the 5000 meters Friday at Stanford’s Cardinal Track and Field Qualifier. Sophomore Brendon Mahoney also provisionally qualified in the 1500 meters.

Metivier posted a season-best time of 16:13.75 to place first in the event and better the former Tech record of 16:18.43 set by Karen Hoffman in 1990. The runner-up in the race was Anna Blue of Washington State, who ran 16:45.28.

Mahoney also enjoyed a season-best race, lowering his provisional mark in the 1500 meters to 3:41.87, just .37 seconds off an automatic performance. He placed fourth in the event, while senior teammate Joe Stegall finished 21st in a season-best time of 3:47.69.

Also competing for Tech were seniors Sara Pardue, who placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.52, and Nicole Campbell, who was 12th in the 1500 in 4:30.88.

The Jackets are not done competing for the weekend, as several athletes will compete at Clemson’s Orange & Purple Classic and the Modesto Relays on Saturday.
