Tech's Mahoney and Kidd Lead Jackets at Outdoor ACC Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior Brendon Mahoney won two Atlantic Coast Conference championships in the 800 meters (1:51.15) and 1500 meters (3:45.76) to lead the Georgia Tech men’s track and field team to a fourth-place finish (103 pts.) at the Outdoor ACC Championships. Freshman Ashlee Kidd captured ACC titles in the 200 meters (23.53) and 400 meters (52.40) to lead the Georgia Tech women’s track and field team to its highest finish ever at the outdoor championships, second (146 pts.). North Carolina defended its title with 186.50 points, while Clemson captured the men’s crown with 224 points.

Other Yellow Jackets tallying ACC titles this afternoon were Montrell Person, Amandi Rhett, Lauren Reimer and Zeb Sion. Person posted a NCAA Region qualifying time of 13.86 in the 110-meter hurdles, while Rhett finished with a NCAA Region time of 11.77 in 100-meter dash. Reimer broke the school record in the women’s heptathlon with 4973 points and Sion finished with a NCAA Region mark of 58’1.00″ in the men’s shot put.

Posting runner-up finishes for the Jackets were Brandy Depland, Michael Massey, Dana Rogers and Shanta Smith. Depland had a personal-record jump of 43’1.75″ in the women’s triple jump, while Massey tallied a NCAA Region qualifying mark of 6’11.75″ in the men’s high jump. Rogers posted a NCAA Region time of 13.77 in the 100-meter hurdles and Smith had a NCAA Region qualifying time of 52.38 in the women’s 400 meters.

After capturing the women’s high jump in ACC and Tech record-setting fashion, sophomore Chaunte Howard earned her third and fourth All-ACC honors of the meet in the women’s triple jump and 100mHH. Howard had a NCAA Region qualifying mark of 42’5.25″ in the triple jump and a NCAA Region time of 13.78 in the 100mHH.

The final all-conference honoree for Tech was sophomore Alex Van Heuven. Van Heuven finished third in the women’s heptathlon with 4535 points.

The women’s 4×100-meter relay team of Rogers, Ameca Williams, Andriane Lapsley and Rhett finished third with a time of 45.05.

Registering fourth-place finishes for the Rambling Wreck were Barton Crist, Greg McCormick, Neil McDonagh and Smith. Crist finished with a time of 1:52.74 in the men’s 800 meters, McCormick scored 6450 points in the men’s decathlon, McDonagh posted a season-best time of 3:47.70 in the men’s 1500 meters and Smith had a NCAA Region qualifying mark of 41’8.00″ in the women’s triple jump.

Junior Brian Ford, Lapsley, senior Priscilla Reed and Rogers also picked up fifth-place finishes for the Yellow Jackets. Ford finished with a season-best time of 47.87 in the men’s 400 meters, Lapsley posted a time of 14.07 in the women’s 100mHH and 11.96 in the 100 meters. Reed posted a season-best time of 1:02.68 in the 400-meter hurdles, while Rogers had a season-best time of 24.64 in the women’s 200. Rogers also finished eighth in the 100 with a time of 12.29.

Junior Jonathan Spillman and freshmen Trevor Crites, Jordan Crosby and James Lemons II rounded out top-eight finishers for the Jackets. Spillman finished sixth in the men’s shot put with a mark of 52’3.75″, Crites tallied a score of 5354 points to finish eighth in the men’s decathlon, Crosby finished seventh in the 400mIH with a time of 54.83 and Lemons II finished seventh in the men’s triple jump with a season-best mark of 48’0.00″.

Tech will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., for the Penn Relays on April 22-24.
