Tech's Hoye Leads Jackets at Orange & Purple Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. – Freshman Derek Hoye clocked a NCAA Region qualifying time of 1:49.43 in the men’s 800 meters to lead the Georgia Tech track and field teams at the Orange and Purple Classic on Saturday night.

Hoye, a native of Columbus, Ohio, finished first in the 800. Sophomore Josh Hammel finished sixth in the 800 with a time of 1:56.48.

Junior Jewel Welch led the women with a third-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 42 feet. Senior Dore’ Madere finished third in the women’s discus with a toss of 145 feet, 8 inches.

Freshman Antoinetta McKay tallied a pair of seventh-place finishes in the women’s 200- and 400-meter dash events with times of 24.81 and 57.37, respectively.
