Tech Women's Tennis Struggles on Day One of St. Mary's Fall Classic

Knoxville, Tenn. – Yellow Jacket rookie Annelies Schenk was the lone winner for the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team on the first day of play at the St. Mary’s Fall Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. The event is being contested at the Goodfriend Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee.

Schenk battled for a straight-set victory over Maryland’s Andrea Fusea in the first round of the singles flight four draw. Schenk won the first set by a solid 6-2 score, but held on in a tiebreaker to capture the second set and the match by a 7-6 (5) count. She will next face Kendrick Bunn of North Carolina in the second round on Saturday morning.

Tech senior Mysti Morris was unable to overcome a strong effort by Tennessee’s Vilmarie Castellvi in the first round of the singles flight one. Vilmarie, who is the nation’s top-ranked singles player, garnered a straight-set win over Morris by matching scores of 6-3, 6-3. Morris will next face Kentucky’s Kacie Anson in the back draw on Saturday.

In the singles flight two draw, Jacket junior Sekita Grant dropped her 2002-03 season debut in straight sets to Purdue’s Gretchen Haynor by a 6-1, 6-4 score. Fellow junior Maria Nieto fell in the first round of the singles flight five draw, losing a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Maryland’s Chloe Chavades. Freshman Lyndsay Shosho was Tech’s final singles competitor, as she was beaten in the first round of the flight four draw by NC State’s Danielle Staddelmann by matching 6-4, 6-4 scores.

In doubles action, Tech’s team of Shosho and Nieto dropped a pair of matches in the doubles flight two draw, falling to Jassawalla and Staddelmann of NC State in the first round by a 9-7 score, before being defeated by Mississippi State’s Hirt and Rekasi in the first round of the consolation draw in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (3).

The St. Mary’s Fall Tennis Classic will continue on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with singles action to be followed by the doubles final round. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the final round of singles play. Full tournament results are available at www.utladyvols.com.
