May 10, 2003

LOS ANGELES – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team was unable to rally after dropping the doubles point and fell by a 4-0 score to fifth-ranked Southern California in the NCAA Regional Final in Los Angeles, Calif., on Saturday afternoon. The two-day tournament was held at the Dennis X. Marks Tennis Center on the USC campus.

The Yellow Jackets (14-7) fell behind the Trojans (21-5) early on by dropping two of three doubles matches to begin play. Southern California’s team of Carine Vermeulen and Melissa Esmero downed Tech’s Kacie Anson and Sekita Grant by an 8-3 score at No. 3 to give the Trojans an early lead in doubles. The Jackets leveled the matches at 1-1 as the team of Jaime Wong and Kelly Anderson upset USC’s 18th-ranked Jewel Peterson and Tiffany Brymer by an 8-4 count at No. 1. The Trojans clinched the point at No. 2, as Anita Loyola and Luana Magnani downed Tech’s Mysti Morris and Lyndsay Shosho by an 8-5 score.

In singles play, USC upped its advantage to 3-0 in the overall match with wins at Nos. 2 and 5. The Trojans’ Tiffany Brymer was the first winner as she defeated the Jackets’ Lyndsay Shosho at No. 5 by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 and Luana Magnani downed Tech’s Jaime Wong at No. 2 by scores of 6-1 and 6-3.

The match then tightened up with the Yellow Jackets being up a set or having split sets in three of the four remaining matches. Southern California clinched the overall match at No. 4 singles, as Anita Loyola hung on for a straight-set, 7-5, 7-5 victory over Tech’s Mysti Morris.

While the Jackets’ team season is over, senior Jaime Wong will be one of 64 players competing in the NCAA Singles Championship in Gainesville, Fla., which will get under way on May 19. Full tournament results can be found at www.ncaasports.com.
