Tech Women's Tennis Downs NC State in ACC Opener, 6-1

RALEIGH – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team went on the road and picked up a win in its 2002 ACC opener, with a 6-1 decision over NC State on Saturday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C.

The Yellow Jackets (11-3, 1-0 ACC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on the Wolfpack (6-6, 1-2 ACC) by claiming a pair of doubles victories on the day. Tech’s team of Sekita Grant and Mysti Morris got the Jackets started by taking an 8-3 win over Kristen Nicholls and Katrina Gildemeister at No. 1. Fallon Koon and Laura Ozolins teamed up at No. 3 to take an 8-4 victory over Danielle Staddelmann and Landis Strader.

In singles action, Mysti Morris continued her solid play at No. 1, earning a straight-set win over Katrina Gildemeister, by a 6-1, 6-4 score. Freshman Catherine Gunn followed Morris at No. 2, claiming a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kristen Nicholls. The Yellow Jackets’ third singles winner of the day was sophomore Sekita Grant, who defeated Loni Worsley at No. 4 in straight sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-3.

Senior Laura Ozolins was victorious at No. 5, as she downed Jennifer Jassawalla in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Fallon Koon was Tech’s final singles winner of the day, beating the NC State’s Danielle Staddelmann in a three-set affair, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Georgia Tech will return to action tomorrow when it travels to Wake Forest to face the fifth-ranked Demon Deacons in a match that will begin at noon.
