Tech Women's Tennis Competes On Day One Of Michigan Invitational

Jan. 19, 2013

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech freshman Megan Kurey battled back for a tough three-set win as the Yellow Jacket women’s tennis team competed on day one of the Michigan Invitational.

Kurey fought back after dropping a 6-3 first set to win 7-5 in the second set and 6-3 in the third to defeat Ole Miss’ Erin Stephens, a 2012 Second Team All-SEC selection and SEC All-Freshman honoree.

“Megan played great against an All-SEC player,” head coach Rodney Harmon said. “She played high-quality tennis and played the way we know she can play.”

Freshman Kendal Woodard and sophomore Jasmine Minor both dropped tough three-set matches. Minor lost her first set 6-0 but rallied for a 6-4 second set win before dropping a 6-3 decisive third set.

The Jackets’ doubles play was equally hard-fought on day one in Ann Arbor. Elizabeth Kilborn and Alex Anghelescu fell in a tiebreak, 8-7 to Michigan’s Ronit Yurovsky and Brooke Bolender. Tech’s No. 2 team of Kurey and Woodard lost a close 8-6 match to Sarah Lee and Mimi Nguyen.

Junior Muriel Wacker and Natasha Prokhnevska earned an 8-6 victory over the Wolverines’ Amy Zhu and Kristen Dodge.

“Today was a good day,” Harmon said. “We had some tight matches and we played very good competition. The matches reflected how close we are. I think it was great practice and preparation for us for kick-off weekend. We’re looking forward to tomorrow and excited about the opportunity. This is a great event, great for us to get matches and adjusted to being inside.”

Tech will play doubles against USF at 11:30 a.m. Sunday and against Ole Miss at 1 p.m. The Jackets will challenge the host Wolverines in singles to conclude Sunday.
