ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will look to extend its current win streak when it travels to North Carolina to face Wake Forest (10-7, 1-6 ACC) on Friday at 7 p.m. and then sixth-ranked North Carolina (18-2, 7-1 ACC) in Chapel Hill on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game with the Tar Heels will be televised on the ACC’s Regional Sports Network, which includes Fox Sports Net South and the Sunshine Network.
The Yellow Jackets (13-6, 2-5 ACC) found a working formula for success against Clemson and went back to it in gaining a victory over NC State on Sunday. The formula for Tech included strong rebounding and hard work on the defensive end of the floor.
Against the Wolfpack, the Jackets once again took control of the boards on both ends of the court, recording 26 defensive rebounds, which was just three fewer than NC State’s total of 29 for the entire game. Tech also came down with 14 offensive caroms for a 40-29 rebounding margin in the contest.
Tech’s improved defensive play was also evidenced in the second half, as the Jackets’ tenacious play limited the Wolfpack to just five points over the final 11:24 of the game. That effort allowed Tech to overcome a seven-point deficit at the half, outscoring NC State 35-18 in the final 20 minutes of play.
The Jackets have also re-discovered the inside game that had carried them for much of the early part of the year, as senior center Sonja Mallory recorded her third-straight double-double against the Pack with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Mallory also became the ACC’s active leader in double-doubles with 20 following her effort on Sunday.
Junior forward Fallon Stokes netted double figures in points for the seventh time in eight outings and the 16th time in 2003, finishing the game with NC State with 19 points. Stokes just missed a double-double for the second-straight game, pulling down nine rebounds in the contest.
