ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will be looking for its second win in Charlottesville, Va., in three seasons when it travels to face Virginia on Thursday night at University Hall in a game that will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets (11-4, 0-3 ACC) and Cavaliers (5-9, 0-4 ACC) will square off for the 52nd time in history, with Virginia leading the all-time series by a 44-7 margin. Tech has won three of the last five meetings between the two, sweeping the series in 2001 and winning the game in Atlanta last year by a 92-61 score.
Georgia Tech has started out 0-3 in the conference, having faced both of the league’s top two teams in No. 1 Duke and No. 8 North Carolina in the process. Three of the Jackets’ four losses on the year have come to teams that are currently ranked among the top 10 in the nation.
Junior forward Fallon Stokes has continued a trend that she began a year ago by saving her biggest outings of the year for conference play. The Atlanta native poured in a career-best 34 points against North Carolina on 13-of-24 shooting from the field. The point total is the second best by an ACC player this year, as Stokes also added eight rebounds in the contest. She followed that outing with 12 points against Maryland last Sunday and added 21 points against the top-ranked Blue Devils on Monday night to lead the Jackets.
Junior guard Alex Stewart scored in double figures for the fourth-straight game against Maryland, finishing with 10 points. Stewart also netted 11 points against North Carolina, 10 against East Carolina and a career-high 17 against St. John’s. The Norcross, Ga., native has also hit her last 24-straight free throws and leads the league in free throw percentage (.918). Stewart handed out nine assists against Duke, upping her team-leading total to 97, for an average of 6.47 per game, which leads the ACC.
