ATLANTA – Fresh off a successful weekend hosting the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track & field teams are traveling to the historic Penn Relay Carnival Thursday-Saturday at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia, Pa.
In its 113-year history, the Carnival has provided competition for more athletes than any other track meet in the world. During the past ten years, more than 100,000 young men and women from high schools, colleges, clubs, the armed services, preparatory schools, junior high schools, middle schools, parochial schools, and elementary schools have competed in the Carnival. The athletes range in age from under eight to over 80.
“Our teams are looking forward to this season’s trip to Philadelphia to compete in this grand old meet,” men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale said. “We have several team members that are on a great roll right now. A number of them have already qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships. We look forward to the opportunity to add more, or, improve existing marks.”
The 2008 Penn Relays will get underway Thursday at 10 a.m. with the College Women’s 400-meter Hurdles Championship and College Women High Jump. Thursday evening has been designated Distance Night and will kick-off at 7:20 p.m. with the College Men Steeplechase Championship. Friday’s events begin with the College Men 400m Hurdles at 9 a.m. On Saturday, the day will commence with the Olympic Development Men 10k Racewalk at 7 a.m.
Last weekend, the women’s team placed sixth and men finished seventh at the ACC Championships at the George C. Griffin track. Shantia Moss, Kimery Hern and Joanna Wright earned All-ACC honors at the meet for the women’s team, while the men were led by James Lemons II, who won the triple jump and placed third in the long jump, Alphonso Jordan, Steve Marcelle and Andy Powlen.
Seven Yellow Jacket men and 10 women have already qualified for the NCAA Regional which will be held in Gainesville, Fla. on May 30-31.
