Tech Track and Field Opens 2003 Season at Kentucky Invitational

Jan. 16, 2003

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s men’s and women’s track and field teams, each hoping to build on impressive showings a year ago, open the 2003 indoor season at this weekend’s Kentucky Invitational at the Wildcats’ Nutter Field House.

The meet opens Friday at 6 p.m. with the men’s pole vault and women’s high jump. The opening session concludes with the men’s 4×800 relay at 7:45 p.m.

Saturday’s action begins with the men’s high jump at 10:30 a.m. and wraps up with the men’s 4×400 relay at 5:05 p.m.

The defending ACC indoor champions, the Yellow Jacket women enter the season ranked 25th nationally in the Preseason Trackwire 25, which projects scoring at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Scheduled to compete for the Tech women are All-ACC competitors Jessica DeFreitas, Amy Dock, Jodie Nettles, Amandi Rhett, Dana Rogers and Shanta Smith. Additionally, several highly-touted freshman are slated to make their collegiate debuts for the Tech women, including prep jumps standout Chaunte Howard, as well as pole vaulters Kira Barcus and Jessica Graff.

Tech’s men will also field a strong group led by junior middle distance runner Brendon Mahoney and senior 400-meter specialist Bryan Swarn, who are both coming off All-America finishes a year ago. Seniors Sharif Azim and Chris Crawley, as well as sophomores Brian Ford and Zeb Sion, each all-conference honorees in 2002, are also scheduled to compete.

Following this weekend’s action, the Jackets head to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for the MTSU Invitational on January 25.
