THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (11-7, 2-2 ACC) returns home this week to host two Top 20 conference matchups against No. 11 North Carolina (12-5, 4-1 ACC) and No. 15 Duke (11-5, 4-1 ACC). Tech takes on North Carolina on Friday, March 24 at 4 p.m. and will close out the weekend with Duke on Sunday, March 26 at 12 p.m.
Both opponents this week are 4-1 in conference play, sharing a loss to No. 8 Virginia. While both teams are powerhouses in the NCAA, Tech can utilize the momentum from its success last weekend.
Last time out, the Jackets went 2-0 on the road with ACC wins at Clemson and Boston College. At Clemson, Tech claimed a 4-1 victory behind Robert Bauer’s match-clinching win in singles play. At Boston College, the Jackets rallied back after losing the doubles point with six singles victories and defeated the Eagles 6-1.
In the latest, ITA Division I Men’s National Rankings, three Jackets maintained their spots on the Top 125 singles and Top 80 doubles lists. Additionally, Tech was ranked No. 68 out of the top 75 teams.
One of Tech’s top players, Andres Martin jumped to No. 34 this week. He is 13-4 in dual match play with eight wins over nationally ranked opponents. Marcus McDaniel also moved up, earning the No. 60 spot on the list. He currently has the best dual match record on the team, currently 13-3 with five victories over ranked opponents. Keshav Chopra also represents Tech with a No. 86 ranking on the singles list. He is currently 3-4 in conference singles play with a dual match record of 12-5.
Tech’s highest performing doubles team, Martin and McDaniel, earned an impressive No. 20 ranking. The duo has won eight of their last 10 matches and most recently helped the Jackets claim the doubles point over Clemson.
