Chattanooga, Tenn. – Georgia Tech rookie Jose Luis Muguruza was the lone survivor for the Yellow Jackets after winning a pair of matches on the first day of play at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Pre-Qualifier in Chattanooga, Tenn. The top-eight finishers from the event will advance to the qualifying round next week at the Champions Club.
Muguruza did not lose a set on the day, defeating Shane Ellison of Louisiana-Lafayette in the opening round in straight sets. After winning the first set in a tiebreaker by a 7-4 score, Muguruza then battled for a 6-4 second-set victory. In the second round, he faced Felipe Diaz of Oklahoma State and had little trouble, winning by scores of 6-3 and 6-1. Muguruza will now face Paul Warkentin of Arizona in the round of 64 on Saturday morning.
Tech’s other singles winner of the day was senior West Nott, who defeated Saint Louis’ Thomas Kwong in straight sets by scores of 6-3 and 6-4 in the first round. Nott was unable to advance past the second round, as he dropped a three-set, 6-4, 4-6, 5-7, decision to Jose Luis Lechuga of BYU.
