ATLANTA – Georgia Tech will open the season at No. 15 in the preseason USA Today/coaches’ poll, released Friday.
The rank is the highest in the preseason coaches’ poll for the Yellow Jackets in eight years. Tech received a No. 13 ranking prior to the start of the 2001 campaign.
Head coach Paul Johnson’s squad, which began preseason camp Monday, is coming off a 9-4 season in 2008 and a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division title. The Jackets ended the year ranked No. 22 in the final 2008 coaches’ poll.
Tech returns 17 starters and 55 letterwinners, including 2008 ACC Player of the Year Jonathan Dwyer and second team All-American Morgan Burnett.
The Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 59 coaches in the Bowl Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-A.
The Associated Press preseason Top 25 will be released Saturday, Aug. 22.
Tech will kick-off the 2009 season September 5 at 1 p.m. against Jacksonville State.
