Tech Storms to Lead at Puerto Rico Golf Classic

ATLANTA – Third-ranked Georgia Tech fired a 10-under-par 278 Monday, moving into first place by four shots over Florida after two rounds of the Puerto Rico Classic golf tournament in Rio Grande, P.R.

The final round will be played Tuesday on the par-72 River Course at the Westin Rio Mar Golf Resort. The Yellow Jackets, bidding for their first victory of the year after four second-place finishes, are at 18-under-par 558 for the tournament, followed by the Gators at 562, top-ranked Oklahoma State at 565 and Arizona State at 570. First-round leader Georgia, the nation’s No. 2 team, shot 298 and fell back to fifth place at 576.

Tech’s score Monday was the best of the field by five shots, led by a five-under-par 67 from sophomore Roberto Castro and a three-under-par 69 from junior Mike Barbosa. Seniors Chan Song and Nicholas Thompson each shot one-under 71s for the Yellow Jackets.

Song is tied for fifth in the medalist race at five-under-par 139, three shots off the lead of Alejandro Canizares of Arizona State. Barbosa is tied for seventh place at four-under-par 140, and Thompson is in 13th place at three-under-par 141. Castro jumped to a tie for 24th with a one-over-par score of 145, and Kevin Larsen (75 Monday) is tied for 28th at 146.
