Anders Albertson and Richard Werenski each shot 2-under-par 70, while Bo Andrews added a 73 for the Yellow Jackets, who opened their fall season with an 8-under-par score of 280. North Carolina (290, +2) stands 10 strokes back in second place, followed by 11th-ranked Georgia (291), Clemson (294) and North Florida (295).

Tech was the only team among the 14 competing to break par as a team Friday, as the 7,012-yard, par 72 Farm played firm and fast in near-perfect weather conditions.

“This was a very positive start to the year,” said head coach Bruce Heppler, beginning his 19th year at the helm of the Yellow Jackets. There were some very challenging hole locations today which made it hard to get approach shots close. Our goal is to have all five guys in the game going into the closing holes each day, which we did today.”

Schniederjans bogeyed only the par-3 5th, and made birdie four times in a five-hole stretch on the back nine to take a one-stroke lead individually over the Tar Heels’ Bailey Patrick (68). Albertson and Werenski are tied for third at 70. Only nine of the 75 individuals in the field broke par Friday.

Andrews is tied for 17th, while Seth Reeves, who did not count for Tech Friday, is tied for 23rd with a 74.

Tech has won the Carpet Capital Collegiate six times in its 24-year history, but has not captured the title since 2001. The 280 score Friday was the best shot by the Yellow Jackets in one round since 2006.

The field will tee off holes 1 and 10 for Saturday’s second round, and Tech is scheduled to begin its round at 10:40 a.m. at No. 1.
