THE FLATS – Georgia Tech baseball faced trouble in the first inning, but true freshman RHP Luke Schmolke settled to turn in a gem, quelling Pitt for an 11-1 victory on Friday night at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets (27-18, 9-13 ACC) surrendered a leadoff home run before three-consecutive walks loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first inning. After a mound visit, however, Schmolke barreled down and allowed no more runs over the next five innings, retiring 13 of 15 hitters at one point to get his team-leading fifth victory and Tech’s sixth-straight win.

Schmolke then passed the ball to RHP Ben King, who turned in 2.0 innings of one-hit, four-strikeout work. LHP Dalton Smith then closed the final 2.0 innings of no-hit, three-strikeout work to slam the door.

At the plate, Tech launched 11 hits for its 11 runs, getting led by Stephen Reid, who went 4-for-5 with a double, homer and four RBI. Angelo Dispigna, Jake DeLeo and Jadyn Jackson all finished with two hits apiece, while Drew Compton drove in three runs, Jackson Finley drove in a run and John Giesler blasted a double.

The Panthers (20-23, 8-12 ACC) were led by Sky Duff’s leadoff home run. RHP Jack Sokol (5-3) took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned), on six hits in 3.2 innings pitched.

Georgia Tech returns for Game 2 against Pitt on Saturday, May 6. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on ACC Network.
