THE FLATS – For the first time since the 1985-86 season, Georgia Tech will have a rematch of its final regular season game when the 9th-seeded Yellow Jackets open the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament against 8th-seeded Boston College at 12 noon Thursday in first-round play at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.

Tech (16-14, 6-12 ACC) experienced euphoria and disappointment in a three-day span in the season’s final week, knocking off sixth-ranked Miami on the road Wednesday, 71-69, then dropping a 74-72 decision at Boston College Saturday. The loss gave the Eagles the eighth seed and Tech the ninth seed, its highest since thw 2009-10 season.

Thursday’s game, as well as all of Tech’s games in the ACC Tournament, can be heard over the Georgia Tech IMG Sports Network (790 AM, 106.7 FM in Atlanta), as well as satellite radio (check www.siriusxm.com for channel). The game is being televised on the ACC Network (WATL-TV in Atlanta), and is also available nationally on ESPNU.

Boston College (15-16, 7-11 ACC) finished the regular season with three straight wins, at home over Virginia and on the road at Clemson before Saturday’s victory over Tech, which lifted the Eagles into eighth place.

The winner of Thursday’s game advances to face Miami, the ACC regular-season champion and top seed in the tournament, at 12 noon Friday. That winner will advance to a 1 p.m. semifinal Saturday, and the championship game is scheduled to tip at 1 p.m. Sunday.

• Georgia Tech’s No. 9 seed for the ACC Tournament is its highest since the 2009-10 season, when the Yellow Jackets finished 7th (7-9 record) and advanced to the finals (also in Greensboro).

• Boston College is the only ACC member that Tech has never faced in ACC Tournament competition. The Jackets scratched Miami off the have-not-played list last year at Philips Arena.

• Tech’s all-time ACC Tournament record is 24-30, including an 8-14 mark at the Greensboro Coliseum. None of Tech’s three titles occurred in Greensboro, but three of its four runner-up finishes did.

• For the third time, Tech’s first-round game is a rematch of its final ACC regular-season contest. The last time was 1986, when the Yellow Jackets finished the regular-season against Clemson and then played the Tigers again in Greensboro on the way to a runner-up finish. It also happened in 1982, when Tech completed its regular season schedule at North Carolina and then met the Tar Heels on the first round of the tournament in Greensboro. One caveat to that one, however, was that the Jackets played a non-conference game – against Georgia State – in between.
