Tech Nets Third-Straight Top-70 Directors’ Cup Finish

THE FLATS – For the third-straight year, Georgia Tech athletics finished the 2021-22 academic year with a top-70 finish in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors’ Cup standings, coming in at No. 68 nationally in this year’s final rankings. The Directors’ Cup is college athletics’ most prestigious annual all-sports rankings.

This year’s No. 68 finish continues a remarkable recent turnaround for Georgia Tech’s athletics programs. Prior to finishing No. 68 this year, No. 44 in 2020-21 and No. 66 in 2018-19 (the Directors’ Cup wasn’t awarded in 2019-20 due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic), Tech had not finished in the top 70 in the Directors’ Cup standings since 2010-11. The Yellow Jackets’ average ranking over the past three full years is No. 59, up nearly 30 places from their average finish of No. 87 from 2011-12 through 2017-18.

Georgia Tech’s No. 68 finish in 2021-22 comes on the strength of 14 of its 17 teams being represented in the NCAA postseason, including all eight women’s teams for the first time in school history. Seven different Tech teams earned points in the Directors’ Cup standings, bringing the total over the past three full years (2018-19, 2020-21 and 2021-22) to 27. In the three years prior to 2018-19 (2015-16 through 2017-18), 13 Tech teams earned Directors’ Cup points.

Making Georgia Tech’s achievements even more impressive is that it is one of only six institutions ranked among the top 70 in this year’s final Directors’ Cup standings that fields 17 teams or less and one of only 18 schools in the top 70 that has less than 20 teams.

Georgia Tech’s on-field achievements are coupled with great academic success, highlighted by the Yellow Jackets’ most recent NCAA Graduation Success Rate coming in at a school-record 90%. In the NCAA’s latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) data, 13 of Tech’s 15* sports programs boast multi-year APR scores higher than the national average in their respective sports and 10 recorded a perfect single-year APR score of 1,000.
