Tech Men's Track and Field Captures Crown at Tar Heel Elite Invitational, Women Place Fourth

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Led by wins in three events on Saturday, the Georgia Tech men’s track and field team placed first at the Tar Heel Elite Invitational held at North Carolina’s Eddie Smith Field House. The Jackets’ women’s team placed fourth.

Tech’s men outdistanced runner-up North Carolina, 112-96.50, while the women tallied 82 points, finishing one point behind third-place Miami. Georgia claimed the women’s title with 114 points.

Junior All-American Bryan Swarn won the 400 meters in a time of 48.87 and was followed by teammate Sharif Azim, who finished second. Sophomore All-American Brendon Mahoney was first in the 800 meters in 1:52.33, and senior Joe Stegall won the 3000 meters in a time of 8:29.43. Stegall was followed by teammate Neil McDonagh, who finished third.

Freshmen Zeb Sion and Jonathan Spillman placed fourth and fifth in the shot put, respectively. Sion’s mark of 55’07.50″ is a season-best.

Junior Chris Crawley finished fifth in the triple jump (47’06.25″), while Tech’s 4×400 relay team also placed third.

As for Tech’s women, senior Nicole Campbell and sophomore Renee Metivier each posted second place finishes on Saturday. Campbell was the runner-up in the mile, with a time of 4:58.51, while Metivier, placed second in the 3000 meters in 9:24.59. She was closely followed by teammate Katie Griffin, who finished fourth.

Metivier’s time provisionally qualifies her for the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships and established a Tech record, breaking a mark that had stood since 1989.

Dana Hall finished fifth in the shot put with a mark of 44’06.25.
