Tech Men's Tennis Rolls to Fifth-Straight Win, 6-1 Over Georgia State

Feb. 20, 2002

ATLANTA – The 23rd-ranked Georgia Tech men’s tennis team made a strong return to action following a 17-day layoff, cruising to a 6-1 victory over cross-town rival Georgia State on Wednesday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

The Yellow Jackets (5-1) got things rolling early on in the match, capturing the doubles point by sweeping all three of the day’s doubles matches. Tech’s top duo of Roger Anderson and David Wright set the pace for the Jackets, defeating the Panthers (3-1) team of Matias Ormaza and Miha Lisac by an 8-1 score at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 spot, the Jackets’ team of West Nott and Scott Schnugg had little problem with Pablo Perez-Gras and Luka Bernard, winning by an 8-3 score. The Tech sweep of doubles play came as Joao Menano and Stephen Moros downed Albano Franco and Nicolas Lupica by an 8-6 count at No. 3.

In singles action, Wright and Anderson once again led the Yellow Jacket attack as they put Tech ahead 3-0 in the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. Wright won his match with Matias Ormaza in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, while Anderson downed Pablo Perez-Gras in quick fashion, 6-0, 6-3.

The most exciting match of the day actually clinched the dual win for Tech as Joao Menano battled for a three-set win over Luka Bernard at No. 3 singles. Menano needed a pair of tiebreakers and a close third set to claim the win by a 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6), 6-4. Sophomore West Nott was the Jackets fourth winner of the day, defeating Miha Lisac at No. 5 singles in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

In the day’s final match, sophomore Scott Schnugg won his match-up with Nicolas Lupica at No. 6 singles by a 6-3, 6-1 score. Georgia State’s lone win of the day came at No. 4 singles, as Albano Franco defeated Stephen Moros in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-1.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action this weekend as they head to Tennessee to face 33rd-ranked Vanderbilt (Feb. 23, 12 p.m.) and 25th-ranked Middle Tennessee State (Feb. 24, 12 p.m.) in a pair of key road matches.
