Tech Men's Tennis Falls To North Carolina in ACC Finals, 4-3

April 21, 2002

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team’s bid for the school’s first Atlantic Coast Conference men’s tennis championship came up just short as the fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets fell to second seeded North Carolina by a 4-3 score in title match. The tournament was contested at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C.

The two teams split the six singles matches on the day, but the difference in the match came in doubles, as the Yellow Jackets (15-10) dropped all three doubles matches to the Tar Heels (19-5) to open the day. Tech’s duo of West Nott and Scott Schnugg fell to UNC’s Monroe and Pinchbeck at No. 2 by an 8-3 score, while Fabio Campos and Joao Menano lost to Boyd and Meniane at No. 3 by an 8-4 count.

Tech picked up a trio of wins in singles play, as it was victorious at Nos. 4-6. Sophomore Scott Schnugg continued his solid tournament with a win at No. 4 over Carolina’s Nicholas Monros in straight sets by a 6-2, 7-5 score. His doubles partner West Nott, who defeated the Tar Heels’ Geoff Boyd in impressive fashion in straight sets by match 6-3, 6-3 scores, followed him at No. 5 singles. Stephen Moros was the Jackets’ final singles winner of the day, as he defeated North Carolina’s Andrew Metzler in straight sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-1.

The Tar Heels picked up wins at Nos. 1-3 singles to claim the win in the match, with Tech’s best chance win coming at No. 2singles where David Wright dropped a three-set decision to Trystan Meniane by a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 score.

The Yellow Jackets will now wait until May 2 to learn if they will receive an at-large berth into the NCAA Championships. Full ACC Tournament results and coverage is available at www.theacc.com
