Murfreesboro, TN – The 23rd-ranked Georgia Tech men’s tennis team was unable to hold of a rally by 25th-ranked Middle Tennessee State in singles competition and dropped a tight 4-3 decision to the Blue Raiders (7-0) on Sunday at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center.
The Yellow Jackets (5-3) got off to a strong start in the match, claiming the doubles point with a pair of wins on the day. At No.1, Tech’s 51st-ranked duo of Roger Anderson and David Wright upset fifth-ranked Oliver Foreman and Robert Gustafsson by an 8-5 score. The Jackets’ tandem of West Nott and Scott Schnugg followed that with an upset win over 47th-ranked Daniel Klemetz and Kirk Jackson by an 8-4 count.
In singles play, Anderson looked to get Tech started at No. 1, as he upset 15th-ranked Klemetz in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, their only other singles win would come at No. 6, as Scott Schnugg defeated Trevor Short in a three-set affair, by score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The match was decided at No. 4 singles, as Tech’s Stephen Moros and the Blue Raiders Michael Staniak battled into the third set and Moros jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the final frame. Moros was unable to hold the lead however, as Stankiak rallied to win the final five games and in turn, the match by a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 score.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action next Saturday, when the open Atlantic Coast Conference competition at 15th-ranked Duke in a match beginning at noon.
