Tech Men's Tennis Concludes Day One of SIC Tournament

ATHENS, Ga.Georgia Tech men’s tennis concludes day one of the Southern Intercollegiate Championship. The three-day tournament, being played at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, opened with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles play on Friday. 

All three doubles teams were in action today for the Yellow Jackets. Gabrile Brancatelli and Richard Biaigotti dominated their debut doubles match, collecting an 8-3 win against Mercer’s Nemanja Stefanovic and Marceau Fouilhoux. The doubles pair would also win their semifinal match, 8-5, against Clemson’s Stewart Aronson and Matt Pitts. Rohan Sachdev and Krish Arora competed in the red draw, defeating Georgia’s Thomas Paulsell and Miguel Perez Pena, 8-4. With the win, they advanced to the semifinal round, but fell short (8-6) to Clemson’s Maxwell Smith and Noa Vukadin. Sachdev and Arora played again in the red draw however they were defeated in the quarterfinal match 8-2 to Clemson’s Smith/Vukadin. Robert Bauer and Owen DeMuth were also in doubles action today in the silver draw. 

In singles action, Georgia Tech saw victories from Arora, Brancatelli, Bauer, Sachdev, and Elias Shorky to open the tournament. All five Yellow Jackets claimed victories in three-set matches. Arora defeated UNC Charlotte’s Spencer Gray, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, while Brancatelli picked up a hard-fought win over UNC Wilmington’s Gabe Hurtado, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-3 and Sachdev edged Mercer’s Samuel MacLeod, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5. Shorky dropped the first set against Jacksonville State’s Alin Fatu, but rallied back to take the final two sets, 7-5, 6-3, to seal the victory. Bauer rounded out Tech’s victories on Friday, collecting a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win over UNC Wilmington’s Jonathan Baron.

Georgia Tech will be back in action for Day two in Athens at 9:00 a.m. with the single quarterfinal matches.
