ATLANTA – Janie Mitchell scored 20 points to lead Georgia Tech to a 59-49 win over Temple University (1-2) at Alexander Memorial Coliseum on Sunday.

Mitchell, a senior from Jackson, Miss., also led the Yellow Jackets (3-0) with seven rebounds. Tech grabbed a total of 36 rebounds and held Temple, who was averaging 51.5 boards in its first two games, to only 34.

The Jackets were just 10-of-18 from the free-throw line but were able to keep the ball alive with 14 offensive rebounds. Freshman Alex Montgomery finished with four offensive boards including a big rebound and put-back with 14:30 remaining to give the Jackets a 36-30 lead to offset an initial Owl run.

Tech held off the Owls final push, as senior Jill Ingram scored Tech’s final nine points over the last 2:30 of the game, including five from the line. Ingram finished with 12 points and also grabbed four boards and added four steals off the bench.

Temple senior guard Ashley Morris scored 19 points and senior center Lady Comfort added 18 points and 13 boards for the Owls.

A tenacious Jacket defense helped the team to a 27-23 halftime lead. Tech out-rebounded the Owls 21-14, including leading on the offensive boards, 8-2. The Jackets also forced Temple, who is averaging only 16.5 turnovers a game, to 10 in the first half and 26 for the game.

The Jackets will continue their two-game homestand on Wednesday, Nov. 21 against Northwestern of the Big Ten. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
